Value objects - a back door to functional programming paradigms?

Sun, 01/29/2012 - 21:09

DDD-NYC

One of the primary focuses in the four day DDD training course is on the importance of value objects. Their immutability makes it much easier to architect scalable systems. Since a focus on immutability and elimination of shared state is one of the primary axioms of functional programming, do VO's encourage you to program in a more functional style? Have you ever written a purely functional app or subsystem and tried to apply principles from DDD?

In this free form discussion we'll look at the relationship between DDD and functional programming and what we can learn from it for all of our apps - even in traditional OO languages.

Ubiquitous Language and Domain Model debt

Tue, 01/03/2012 - 07:45

DDD-NYC

The idea of having a ubiquitous language seems obvious - until you work on a real project and have to try to keep the language of your code in sync with the ever evolving language and understanding of the domain. We'll start this session with a short presentation looking at how an experienced team with the best of intentions can still run into "model debt" and then we'll open up the floor to discuss the issues we've had keeping our languages ubiquitous and some of the patterns and approaches we've used to handle the problem.

Please don't forget to bring a photo ID to get access to our meeting location.

Patterns for Collaboration with Domain Experts

Thu, 12/01/2011 - 08:20

DDD-NYC

As Domain Driven Design practitioners, we've heard many times that having 'access' to Domain Experts is one of the core prerequisites to a successful DDD approach.

But what exactly does 'access' really mean?  How much access is enough?  How much is too much?  How do you keep even the most eagerly-participating Domain Expert successfully engaged over the duration of a long-term project?  And how do you keep an over-eager Domain Expert from contributing too much to the software development process?  Is there even such a thing as too much collaboration?

In this roundtable discussion we will explore the variety of Collaboration Patterns that can be leveraged while working with Domain Experts in pursuit of delivering a successful software solution.  Drawing on the experiences of the attendees, we will try to uncover approaches that have been repeatedly successful as well as other approaches that have a more spotty record.

Bring your experience and your expertise and contribute to the lively discussion!

Dealing with legacy systems and the Big Ball of Mud

Mon, 10/31/2011 - 08:20

DDD-NYC

Whenever we get a chance to  work on brand new greenfield project most of us would consider this to be lucky. How about those projects that are not so new, sometimes very old with lots of awful code without even a single test? All would agree that these type of projects are often very difficult to work with.

During this session we will discuss techniques and patterns that helps to deal with legacy projects, including refactoring and bringing anti-corruption layer to the rescue.

Please don't forget to bring a photo ID to get access to our meeting location.
